ABOUT OUR TEACHERS

Working with children on a daily basis requires patience, compassion, flexibility and above all, a LOVE for teaching and the desire to see each child reach their full potential. Here at Bonnie Doon Playschool, we have teachers who fill that criteria with ease.

Kayla
Psarros

My name is Mrs. Psarros, and I am thrilled to continue to be a part of this wonderful school community!  As a team, Ms. Koreen and I have a goal that Bonnie Doon Playschool is a place where all feel welcome, safe, and cared for.  We are committed to offering your child the best quality Early Childhood education with high standards of social and academic excellence.  We want our preschool to be a place that your child is excited to attend- a place where they develop skills, knowledge, and a sense of wonder about this amazing world we live in!  It is going to be a fun and exciting year full of learning and new adventures!  I am very eager to see what this year has in store for us! I cannot wait to learn ALL about you, but first, I am going to tell you a few things about me.

I was born and raised in a small town in British Columbia.  When I graduated, I moved to Victoria, B.C. to attend the University of Victoria, where I gained a background in elementary education.  Throughout the years, I have taken many courses, researched, and attended many conferences and seminars to learn more about childhood psychology and how the brain works.  I specifically have enjoyed learning about neurodiversity in children. I particularly enjoy working with the Pre-K age group because I love seeing little light bulbs go off in their heads.  I enjoy watching children have fun, while making academic and social connections through play. Working with children has always been my passion, and I fully believe that investing and nurturing very young, impressionable minds is imperative for their future well-being.  Preschool is a child’s first experience in a school-setting and lays the foundation for a lifetime of learning. As an advocate and lover of education, I acknowledge that the early years are some of the most important and I am elated to be a part of that process!

There is no cookie cutter formula for teaching, but I do believe in taking a holistic approach to learning, paying particular attention to each child's physical, personal, social, and emotional wellbeing, as well as to the cognitive aspects of learning. I hope to foster a trusting relationship with your child, so that he/she feels safe and loved, and that your child always knows just how important they are to our classroom.

When not at school, you will find me enjoying my time with my husband, our three children, and two dogs, Ruby and Annie (you'll learn all about them.) I enjoy cooking, baking, reading, geocaching with family and friends, and volunteering my time in our community. I am an active part of the Rutherford School community, as well as a volunteer with Zoe's Animal Rescue. I love learning about different cultures and experiencing the diversity our city has to offer.

I’m looking forward to the laughter, smiles, hugs and excited chatter this new school year will bring! Welcome back to our returning students and a huge welcome to our new students and their families- I cannot wait to help your child blossom and grow this school year, and am excited to begin our preschool adventure with your child and your family!

Koreen Kowalchuk

Koreen Kowalchuk, Mrs. Kowalchuk,  has been in the teaching field for 15 + years and focused in the early learning field for the past ten years.  She has her Bachelor of Education and Bachelor of Arts from the University of Edmonton and has taught in a variety of educational settings including the City of Edmonton, Government Contracted Education Centres, and Edmonton Public Schools.  She has a passion for early learning and seeks to enrich young minds through nature, learning through play and mindful learning experiences where her young students have fun and practice important skills.  She believes that parents are the primary teachers of their children and that early learning teachers are co-learners with the children, which allows for a wide array of learning to evolve in a classroom.  Listening to children tell stories is a very important aspect of their learning where they can practice speech and language skills.  It promotes empowerment, accuracy and positive communication feedback moments.  She is committed to providing your family with sloving and developmentally sound foundations for a lifetime of learning and she thanks you for allowing your precious little one to join her and Mrs. Psarros in class. In her free time, she and her husband are the General Managers of  The KowalchuK Household. They have two children aged 12 and 10 and  love spending time with their nephews aged 5 and 3. She believes in civil responsibility and volunteers for her community league, school, sports and other local events. Her passions are gardening, writing and nature.  She looks forward to a wonderful year with Bonnie Doon Playschool.
