about us
more than a preschool—
a community.
for over 40 years, Bonnie Doon Playschool has been a place where children build confidence through play, develop meaningful friendships, and discover a lifelong love of learning.
we're more than a preschool—we're a community where children are known, families are valued, and every child is encouraged to grow in an environment rooted in kindness, connection, and belonging.

our story
founded in 1985, Bonnie Doon Playschool has proudly served generations of children and families in Edmonton.
as a parent co-operative, not-for-profit preschool located in the Idylwylde Community League, we've spent more than four decades creating a welcoming place where children feel safe, supported, and excited to learn.
while our classrooms have evolved over the years, our purpose has remained the same- to celebrate childhood while nurturing confident, curious learners through meaningful play and strong relationships.
every family who joins Bonnie Doon Playschool becomes part of a community built on collaboration, encouragement, and shared experiences. Many of our families return with younger siblings, and some former students now bring their own children through our doors- a testament to the lasting connections that have been built here over the years.

more than a parent
co-operative
bonnie doon playschool is proudly operated as a parent co-operative, bringing together dedicated educators, supportive families, and a volunteer board of directors who work together to create an exceptional preschool experience.
while we do not require in-class duty days, families continue to play an important role in our school community. Through volunteering, participating in special events, or serving on our Board, parents help strengthen the welcoming environment that makes Bonnie Doon Playschool so special.
we believe that when families and educators work together, children benefit from consistent support, meaningful relationships, and a strong sense of belonging.

a place to wonder, explore, connect, and grow.
at bonnie doon playschool, we believe children learn best when they feel safe, valued, and encouraged to explore. learning begins with strong relationships and grows through curiosity, play, conversation, and discovery.
our inquiry-led, play-based approach invites children to ask questions, solve problems, create, imagine, take risks, and learn through meaningful, hands-on experiences.
every day, our classroom is filled with laughter, friendships, creativity, and moments of discovery. children learn to work together, express their ideas, build independence, and gain confidence as they explore the world through play.
we believe every child deserves the time and space to wonder, make mistakes, try again, and celebrate their successes. our goal is to honour childhood while intentionally building the confidence, curiosity, independence, and skills children carry with them into kindergarten and beyond.
our philosophy

the heart of who
we are
rooted in kindness, connection, and belonging isn’t simply our tagline. these values shape how we welcome children, build relationships, and create meaningful learning experiences every day.

rooted in kindness
kindness is woven into everything we do. Through everyday interactions, children learn empathy, compassion, respect, patience, and how small acts of kindness can make a big difference.

rooted in connection
strong relationships are at the heart of our school. We intentionally nurture meaningful connections between children, teachers, families, and our wider community because children learn best when they feel safe, supported, and understood.

rooted in belonging
every child deserves to feel accepted, celebrated, and valued exactly as they are. We create an inclusive classroom where children feel confident sharing their ideas, expressing themselves, trying new things, and growing into capable learners.

meet our teachers
at Bonnie Doon Playschool, we believe one of the greatest privileges of being a preschool teacher is getting to know every child who walks through our classroom door.
every child who joins our classroom is wonderfully unique, and we take the time to genuinely know them. We learn what makes them laugh, what sparks their curiosity, what encourages them, and what helps them feel confident. We celebrate their successes, support them through challenges, and create a classroom where they feel safe, valued, and excited to come each class.
we believe children thrive when they know they are seen, heard, and genuinely cared for. By building trusting relationships with every child and partnering closely with families, we create a community where children grow in confidence, build lasting friendships, and discover a love of learning that extends far beyond preschool.
our hope is that every child leaves Bonnie Doon Playschool not only with wonderful memories and new skills, but with the confidence that comes from knowing they were encouraged, celebrated, and loved for exactly who they are.

our learning environment
we believe children learn best in spaces that invite curiosity, creativity, and exploration. Our classroom is thoughtfully designed to encourage children to play, discover, and learn at their own pace.
learning through play
every day begins with a question, an idea, or an invitation to explore. Through inquiry-led, play-based learning, children build confidence, solve problems, express creativity, and discover the joy of learning.
community partnerships
learning doesn't stop at our classroom door. Together with our local community, children explore new places, meet new people, and discover that learning happens everywhere.
learning beyond the classroom
whether we're visiting the library, exploring our neighbourhood, or welcoming special guests into our classroom, these experiences help children build confidence, curiosity, and a deeper connection to the community around them.
